Meaning of obsidian

The name “Obsidian” according to legend, came from the Roman Obsidian which would have brought the first stone during a trip from Ethiopia to Rome. Given its very compact and sharp nature, the first humans already used it as a cutting tool or as a weapon. Also in ancient times, art objects and mirrors were made of Obsidian.

For some linguists, the name obsidian, would come from the Latin Obsidio which means “surrounded”, in correspondence with the breaks of the stone.

These breaks form hollows that look like dark circles. In some cultures like the Egyptian culture, this stone has mortuary significance.

History of Obsidian

A magnificent black semi-precious stone, obsidian shimmers with reflections in contact with light and has been used since prehistoric times. At the time, it was used for making bladed weapons or amulets.

Obsidian stone is also nicknamed volcanic ice because of the conditions of its genesis, and the hyaline aspect it presents, obsidian has several varieties. These varieties are used in various ways in lithotherapy.

In fact, obsidian was first discovered by an ancient Roman figure (Obsius) in Ethiopia. It is for this reason that the name of this Roman was lent to the stone.

Used in prehistory to make arrowheads and sharp objects, obsidian was a great help for prehistoric men. This is undoubtedly a fact that was discovered by archaeologists.

The most magnificent obsidians have been discovered in Mexico. For Mexicans, it is a stone that contains many therapeutic properties.

Whether in fantasy literature or in real life, obsidian is talked about a lot. The main deposits of this mineral are found in the USA and Mexico.

Obsidian Properties

Noble obsidian is a variety of obsidian that forms when lava cools rapidly. The rapid cooling gives obsidian a more glass-like appearance than other types of obsidian, which form in more liquid streams.

The result is a very smooth, shiny surface, which can sometimes appear metallic or opalescent when it catches the light at certain angles.

The mineralogy of noble obsidian includes feldspar (especially oligoclase), quartz and mica with small amounts of titanium dioxide (titanium oxide). Noble obsidian also has traces of magnesium oxide, sodium oxide, and manganese oxide impurities.

The obsidian stone consists mainly and largely of pebbles. These pebbles belong to volcanic glasses which rise from viscous magma.

By itself, the rock mass does not crystallize, but a solid structure equivalent to glass is formed. Generally, this mineral is black in color.

However, there are other types of color that can be observed:

  • Dark brown;
  • Dark green;
  • The colors of the rainbow;
  • The red.

Naturally given the conditions which govern its formation, one sometimes observes inclusions of crystals of quartz and feldspar in its composition. Among the varieties of obsidians, there are:

  • Silver obsidian;
  • Black obsidian;
  • Mahogany obsidian;
  • Smoky obsidian;
  • Celestial Eye Obsidian;
  • Snowflake obsidian;
  • Rainbow Obsidian
  • Golden obsidian.

Obsidian stones are found on many sites where volcanic activities have taken place or are taking place (Japan, Russia, Indonesia, Guatemala, Iceland, Turkey, United States, Greece, Hungary). Obsidian is also an important side stone for zodiac signs such as Capricorn and Libra.

How is obsidian formed?

Obsidian is a semi-precious stone that forms during rapid cooling of magmatic lava. This rock is particularly rich in gas, but cannot escape because it is too viscous. It therefore remains trapped in the rock. Also the magmatic lava that forms obsidian is very thick and rich in silica.

The rapid formation of obsidian prevents atoms from organizing into crystalline structures. At the end of the process, a volcanic glass is obtained which has a smooth uniform texture.

Also, the lack of crystalline structure explains the presence of sharp edges and very thin blades that obsidian has. It is therefore indisputably different from a crystal.

The different types of obsidian?

There are several different types of obsidians. Of a completely black basic color, the other colors appear following the changes in the impurities and in the state of oxidation of the chemical elements which it comprises.
