Answered: Is Obsidian Stronger Than Diamond?

Obsidian

Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock belonging to the group of silicates, formed by aluminum silicates and a large percentage (70% or more) of silica or silicon dioxide (SiO2).

It is black or very dark volcanic glass (but it is not crystal), sometimes with metallic reflections. It is found as lava in volcanic regions.

Obsidian is not a mineral, because it is not crystalline, although it may appear so. Under the microscope, it can be seen that it is not formed by crystals, but by a homogeneous amorphous crystal. It is often classified as a mineraloid.

Where can you find Obsidian?

In recent lava flows and acid volcanoes: Java (Japan).

Prehistoric flows of intermediate chemistry: Iaho (Hungary), Utah (United States).

Prehistoric basaltic flow Hawaii (United States), the island-volcano of Lipari and the Etna volcano, both in Italy.

Composition of the Diamond

The most famous diamonds are colorless. But this gorgeous gem also comes in shades of blue, gray, pink, green, blue-gray, yellow-brown, and even black.

This last type of diamond, very rare, would come from space, formed about 3 billion years ago. Its chemical structure is different from terrestrial diamonds (they are polycrystalline aggregates) and it includes hematite.

But the diamond we know most about is made of pure carbon. Maximum index on the Mohs scale, its hardness is 10. Which means that only another diamond can scratch it.

But that does not prevent it from being brittle. Its density is 3.52, its crystal system is cubic.

The good thing about black stones is that they go with everything, and can result in a minimalist and elegant ‘look’ or one with more vivid colors.

The problem with obsidian is that it neutralizes the energies of the rest of the stones, so it is advisable to wear it alone.

It is only considered that rock crystal can have a positive effect when combined with obsidian.
